Albert Young papers, 1819-1948 and undated.

Collection contains letters mainly from Young to various relatives. There are a few letters to Young from his brothers Frederick and Moses, mostly in regard to money matters, as well as several letters to and from Young's wife, Caldonia, regarding the burial of her mother, Harriet Mason, in 1941. In addition, Young wrote letters to his mother, Lydia, regarding his decision to join the military (1894), and described the activities of his unit while stationed at Fort Custer, along with their participation in the Philippine American War. Letters from Lydia mention family matters and local events of note in Charles Town, W. Va. Additional materials are probably family papers (1819-1878 and undated), including poetry, lists of personal accounts, and various letters; a packet of undated calling cards; and 3 black-and-white photographs. Two of the photographs are early 20th-century silver gelatin printing out papers of an African American woman and her children, possibly with the last name Rutherford, taken at the Pearman studios in Charles Town. It is not clear what connection the woman had with the Young family, although comments on the back of the two photographs indicate that it was no longer a friendly relationship.
